Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States.
The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened.
It struck 16 years to the day since Hurricane Katrina hit the same area, killing nearly 2,000 people.
Governor Edwards said it is one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Louisiana in recent history.

so much sensationalism ! This is true this hurricane is catostrophic but he says “basements are filled with water” What ? I am a born and raised New Orleanian and we dont have basements because we are under the sea level! Also its not cold during the storm.. its still well over 25 C or somwhere in the mid 80’s . And no Louisiana is not always hot and humid…. But anyways thanks for the tid bit about my city and also the mardi gras bead cameo in the back to add onto your extra cheese.
Some houses do have basements. My auntie stay on Elysian fields in a large White House and they have a basement. Ofc not all of em have basements.

“A catastrophic transmission failure” is the best argument to date for a distributed rather than a centralized electrical grid. Such would prevent the loss of a regional blackout, as power would be supplied locally and drawn, or fed to the grid as local supply & demand dictate. As is the entire region was depend on a pair of transmission lines to support the entire local grid. Once these towers, & lines are compromised all incoming power is lost.

I think the current consensus is a Smart grind where you have an inter-networked system of distributed grid that can mutually support neighbors ideally overlayed and connected to a modest centralized grid of strategic heavy generators limited to providing for the critical industrial base with the capacity and transmission to support failed distributed grid at distance in situations like this. That said the real issue here is the down transmission capacity of these small poorly fund distributed grids providers who rely on above ground rather then more expensive bellow ground power lines. The real solution here is just to invest in better infrastructure weather you distribute or centralize doesn’t really matter so long as it hardened against wings and such.

Man just happens to be in the way of the paths that hurricanes follow. These hurricanes are necessary to bring gulf moisture far inland.
It’s average elevation above sea level is just 100 feet. It’s largest city, New Orleans, is 6 feet below sea level. Basically, it’s pretty much built to be hurt by every flood or hurricane that hits it.
I know New Orleans is a really special place but I just wouldn’t want to live in a place where you have to evacuate every two years if you’re lucky.

We stayed, and it was a mistake. Lot of people don’t have two floor homes. But, everyone else is one story and lot of people in neighborhood died in their houses and their attics. We’ve called 911 and let them know that there are a lot of bodies floating around us. But, they said that they can’t get out. IT’ll be days, they said.
