In a medieval town in Poland a few hours’ drive from Ukraine, volunteers from across Europe are preparing aid convoys bound for the border. Volunteers are working against the clock to pack and distribute as much aid into Ukraine as they can, as organisers worry Belarusian forces allied with Russia could soon block their supply lines. And some volunteers are crossing the other way, back into Ukraine, to provide humanitarian relief or to take up arms against Russia. The editor-in-chief of Russia’s sole independent TV news channel has left the country. Tikhon Dzyadko of TV Rain (Dozhd) fled Russia after the channel’s website was blocked by government authorities. It followed a warning for media outlets to stop spreading what Russian communications regulators describe as “false information” about what they call a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
