Sudan rejects African mediation efforts, Khartoum says language around talks incorrect

A delegation headed by several Horn of Africa leaders has reached a roadblock in its mediation effort to stop the fighting in Sudan. The Sudanese Foreign Ministry rejected the proposal made by eight African nations, saying the language surrounding the talks is incorrect. The government in Khartoum says describing the conflict as a ‘fight between two generals’ is a false narrative. It sees the conflict as a battle between a national army and a group rebelling against it. Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith is in the studio covering the mediation efforts. Aid groups worry that the violence could spread across the region and the Masalit warn that other tribes could be targeted next. Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Adre, eastern Chad. A Cold War treaty is unravelling but can it be rescued? | Inside Story

Treaties are hard fought and often take years to negotiate. They are designed to keep peace, preventing rival countries from going to war. One agreement, signed in 1990 towards the end of the Cold War, is the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. The United States, other NATO members, the former Soviet Union and its central and eastern European allies agreed to prevent military build-up at their borders. But in recent years, NATO’s expansion towards east and Russia’s security interests have left that accord all but meaningless.
