South Africa is set to begin a legal battle against Israel on Thursday. It accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza, during its intense bombardment and ground operation in the strip. The hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague are scheduled to last two days, with both parties laying out their arguments. Al Jazeea’s Aksel Zaimovic takes a closer look at the evidence South Africa will be presenting. The lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague drew criticism from the United States on Wednesday. White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby dismissed the submission, labelling it as meritless, counterproductive, and lacking any factual basis. Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara criticizes John Kirby’s brief dismissal of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, emphasizing the thoroughness of the 84-page document. Marwan perceives Kirby’s response as disrespectful and lacking diplomatic courtesy, asserting that South Africa and the academic community deserve more acknowledgement. Marwan also questions the US stance on the Gaza death toll, expressing concerns about the intent behind […]
Sultan Barakat, a professor of public policy at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, says that the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice will be “the most important instrument of international pressure against Israel”. “The way that South Africa has addressed this issue is that they are purely focused on the fact that Israel, by December 29 when the case was filed, has murdered more than 20,000 civilians without achieving any clear goal, in that they seem to be pursuing a genocide against the Palestinian people and specifically within Gaza,” Barakat said. The ICJ works slightly differently from the International Criminal Court in that […]
A relatively new word in the lexicon of war is ‘domicide.’ It describes the destruction of houses, and other buildings, making the area where they once stood no longer habitable. And the UN says that’s what’s happening in Gaza. Al Jazeera’s Imogen Kimber reports. The US veto on Friday against a proposed UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza has triggered conversation and a call to action to use a rare United Nations resolution in efforts to stop Israel’s brutal war on Gaza. Egypt and Mauritania on Monday invoked Resolution 377A (V) to call for an emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday. The resolution says that if the UNSC is not able to discharge its primary responsibility of maintaining global peace due to lack of unanimity, the UNGA can step in. The UN secretary general Antonio Guterres has invoked his most powerful diplomatic tool to try to stop the killing of Palestinians in Gaza. He’s directing the security council to discuss the ‘humanitarian catastrophe’ and is calling for an urgent truce. Israel dismissed the move as a ‘new moral low’ and said Guterres should resign. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has invoked what is widely considered to be the most powerful diplomatic tool at his disposal. In a letter to the UN Security Council, Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, which states that “the Secretary-General may bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security”. The letter represents the first time Guterres has invoked the article since he took over the role of UN secretary-general on January 1, 2017. In the letter, Guterres calls for the Security Council to press to avert a humanitarian catastrophe and appeals for a humanitarian ceasefire […]
