Thousands of people have rallied in Mali against the former colonial power, France. They celebrated the expulsion of the French ambassador. The demonstration happened on the same day the European Union unveiled a series of sanctions against the country’s military leaders. Heavy gunfire heard near presidential palace in Guinea-Bissau

Heavy gunfire has been heard in the capital of Guinea-Bissau near the seat of the government, according to media reports. Heavily-armed men surrounded the Palace of Government on Tuesday, where President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and Prime Minister Nuno Gomes Nabiam were believed to have gone to attend a cabinet meeting. The presidential palace is located on the edge of the capital close to the airport. Sierra Leone struggling to recover 20 years after civil war’s end

It was a war infamous for its cruelty, mutilations and child soldiers paid for by exports of so-called “blood diamonds” mined by slave labour. The war ended 20 years ago in Sierra Leone, but the recovery and reconciliation processes have been slow. The government is focused on fighting corruption, improving infrastructure and reducing unemployment, but significant hurdles and divisions remain.
