Kyiv mayor: ‘We will fight to death to protect our streets’

In the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, soldiers and volunteers have built hundreds of checkpoints to protect the city of nearly 4 million, often using sandbags, stacked tires and spiked cables. Russia does have a significant air force capable of causing serious harm over large areas. But still functioning Ukrainian Air Defence, a surprise to many, continues to contain it. Russia-Ukraine talks due as blasts rock Kyiv, Kharkiv

Talks between Ukraine and Russia are due to begin on Monday morning near the Belarusian border, reports TASS news agency. Huge explosions lit up the sky early on Sunday south of the capital, Kyiv, where people hunkered down in homes, underground garages and subway stations and the government maintained a 39-hour curfew in anticipation of a full-scale assault by Russian forces. ‘Stop filming’: Al Jazeera team in eastern Ukraine briefly detained by soldiers

This is the moment when Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford and his team in eastern Ukraine were stopped and questioned by Ukrainian soldiers, as shots were fired in the background. Video footage shows Mr. Stratford and his team raising their hands while shouting “journalists” as soldiers are heard saying “stop filming” as gunfire rings out.
