For Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Ukraine is much more than NATO’s potential expansion eastward. The fall of the Soviet Union was a huge setback for Moscow and its influence, and the loss of Ukraine was particularly tough pill to swallow. Thus far, Ukraine has largely rejected Putin’s attempts to bring the former Soviet republic back into Russia’s orbit, despite his view that they share a “single historic and spiritual space”. UNSC discusses Ethiopia dam amid strained ties with Egypt, Sudan

UN warns Myanmar military as generals defend power grab

UN: 110 civilians killed in Nigeria attack

The United Nations says at least 110 civilians have been killed and many more injured in an attack in Nigeria’s northeast. Funerals have been held for some of the dozens of farm workers killed while working in rice fields. Local officials blame Boko Haram fighters for the violence.
