It has been the centre of United States military operations against al-Qaeda and the Taliban for nearly 20 years. Now, Bagram airbase has been transferred back to the Afghan government after US and NATO forces left the facility. The Taliban has welcomed the withdrawal, describing it as a positive step, and called for a complete withdrawal of all foreign troops. Heavy fighting is continuing in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Helmand between Taliban fighters and government troops. Violence escalated on Sunday, despite continuing peace negotiations in Qatar that started more than a month ago. More than 30,000 people have since fled to the provincial capital of Lashkar Gar.
