Malians rally after army calls for protests over ECOWAS sanctions

Thousands of people have heeded calls by Mali’s military rulers for a nationwide protest against sanctions by the West African economic bloc, ECOWAS. The sanctions were imposed after the country’s military coup leader delayed elections – due next month – until 2025. The military government asked the public to demonstrate, calling the measures extreme. French troops in Africa: Forces leave Mali’s Timbuktu after nine years

France has pulled its troops out of the Malian northern city of Timbuktu as part of a general withdrawal out of the country by early 2022. In 2013, French troops were deployed to help prevent attacks by fighters linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS (ISIL). But Mali’s prime minister says that these groups are still a danger to the country’s security.
