French troops in Africa: Forces leave Mali’s Timbuktu after nine years

France has pulled its troops out of the Malian northern city of Timbuktu as part of a general withdrawal out of the country by early 2022.
In 2013, French troops were deployed to help prevent attacks by fighters linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS (ISIL).
But Mali’s prime minister says that these groups are still a danger to the country’s security.
