Niger coup leaders rebuff overtures backed by US, UN & AU to talk

Military leaders of the coup in Niger have refused to receive representatives from the United Nations, the African Union – and the regional organisation, ECOWAS. The coup leaders said their safety could not be guaranteed. US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland flew to Niamey on Monday but was denied permission to meet with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani or with Bazoum, who is in detention. Burkina Faso and Mali warn against foreign intervention after Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any intervention in neighbouring Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their two countries, a signal of support for leaders of the recent coup there.
