Afghanistan: Loud blast, gunshots heard near a hotel in Kabul

A series of explosions followed by repeated gunfire have been heard in Kabul. An eyewitness says the explosion took place near a hotel popular with Chinese investors. Armed men stormed the building in central Kabul and opened fire. It’s yet not known who is behind the attack or if there are any casualties. Earthquake hits Philippines’ Luzon island, rattling Manila

An earthquake has hit the northern Philippines, shattering windows at its epicentre and causing high-rise towers to shake more than 300km (185 miles) away in the capital Manila. The quake, which struck the mountainous province of Abra on the main island of Luzon at 8:43am local time (00:43 GMT), was measured at a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 by the US Geological Survey (USGS), 7.2 by the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and 7.3 by the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). Ukraine war: Moscow claims capture of Lysychansk

Russia’s defence minister tells President Vladimir Putin that Moscow’s forces “have established full control over the city of Lysychansk” in Ukraine’s Luhansk province. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that “as a result of successful military operations, the armed forces of the Russian Federation, together with units of the People’s Militia of the Luhansk People’s Republic, have established full control over the city of Lysychansk”, according to Russian news agencies. Dozens of people found dead in truck in San Antonio, Texas

At least 46 have been found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, in what appears to be a human smuggling attempt along the United States-Mexico border. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said 16 other people found in the trailer on Monday were transported to the hospital for heat stroke and exhaustion. They included four minors. “The patients we saw were hot to the touch. They were suffering from heat stroke, heat exhaustion. Ukraine war: Explosions rock Kyiv central district

Several explosions were heard in the Shevchenkivskiy district of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko has said on the Telegram messaging app. There was no immediate information on the cause of the explosions. “Ambulance crews and rescuers dispatched to the scene,” Klitschko said. “There are people under the rubble. Some residents were evacuated, two victims were hospitalized,” he added. Texas school shooting: 19 children and two adults killed

“It is time to turn this pain into action”. That is the message from US President Joe Biden after 19 young children and two adults were killed in a school shooting in Texas. The assault by a lone teenage gunman is the deadliest at an American school in a decade. The 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde before he was killed by law enforcement, officials said. Pakistan Parliament dismisses no-confidence motion against Khan

Imran Khan has survived a move to oust him as Pakistan’s prime minister, getting a reprieve when the deputy speaker of Parliament blocked a no-confidence motion as unconstitutional. Khan, whose fate was not immediately clear, later advised the country’s president to dissolve Parliament, leading to fresh political instability in the nuclear-armed country of 220 million people. Russian forces enter Kharkiv; street fighting under way
