Plane carrying 133 crashes in China: State TV

A China Eastern Airlines passenger plane carrying 133 people has crashed in southwest China, state broadcaster CCTV reported. There was no information about any casualties in the incident on Monday as yet. The Boeing 737 plane crashed in the countryside near Wuzhou city in the Guangxi region. It “caused a mountain fire”, CCTV said, adding that rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. There was no word on the cause of the crash of the plane, which Flightradar24 identified as a 6-year-old 737-800 aircraft. South Africa top court orders Jacob Zuma to prison for contempt

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been found guilty of contempt of court and sentenced to 15 months in jail by the country’s top court. This came after he failed to appear before an inquiry investigating corruption during his time in office. A commission has been hearing allegations the wealthy Gupta family used its friendship with Zuma to win government contracts and influence policy. India tops 20m COVID cases, ‘horrible’ weeks ahead

The number of coronavirus cases reported in India since the start of the pandemic has exceeded 20 million. It came as the health ministry announced more than 300,000 infections for the 13th straight day. And with nearly 3,500 deaths in the last 24 hours, the number of fatalities has topped 220,000. India COVID patients ‘die due to oxygen shortage’

India’s critical shortage of life-saving oxygen continues. As many as 24 patients, including those with COVID-19, died in a hospital in Karnataka state after it ran out of oxygen. India’s hospitals are struggling to deal with the world’s steepest surge in cases. The country reported more than 350,000 cases and 3,400 deaths on Monday. North Korea carries out suspected ballistic missile launch

North Korea has fired two suspected ballistic missiles, Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide said on Thursday. The missiles were launched from South Hamgyong Province into the sea off Japan’s eastern coast. The US Pacific Command says this shows Pyongyang is a threat to its neighbours.
