Ethnic clashes continue in India’s Manipur despite army presence

New violence has erupted in Manipur state despite the deployment of thousands of security forces to quell the fighting in India’s northeast region. Authorities had imposed an internet blackout and issued shoot-at-sight orders in ‘extreme cases’ in an effort to contain the violence. The fighting started after a court ruling recommended special economic status for the majority Meitei community — a decision opposed by minority tribal groups. Al Jazeera’s Barbara Angopa reports. ‘Remarkable’ drug reduces Alzheimer’s decline, study shows

An experimental Alzheimer’s drug has been shown to slow significantly the cognitive and functional decline linked to the disease in results hailed as “remarkable” by experts, despite some patients experiencing serious side effects. United States pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly announced on Wednesday that in a late-stage trial of nearly 1,200 people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the drug, donanemab, slowed the progression of symptoms by 35 percent over a period of 18 months compared with a placebo. Sudanese struggle to get basic commodities amid conflict

Taking advantage of relative calm, many residents in Khartoum and the neighbouring city of Omdurman emerged from their homes to seek food and water, queueing at bakeries and grocery stores, after days of being trapped inside by the fighting between the army and the rapid support forces. Some inspected shops or homes that had been destroyed or looted. Gunfire and loud explosions could be heard in the city, though residents said clashes were in more limited pockets, mainly around the military’s headquarters and the Republican Palace in central Khartoum and around bases in Omdurman across the Nile River.
