Ukraine-Russia crisis: Life inside separatist-controlled Donesk

In the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a breakaway region of eastern Ukraine, little has changed since the fighting broke out in 2014. Most of the people who used to live there are too scared to return because of sporadic shelling and because fears are growing about potential renewed conflict. But the young generation, many of whom were children when the conflict started, seem determined to live their lives as normally as they can. A powerful winter storm packing heavy snow and high winds has pummeled the United States East Coast, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights as severe weather alerts were sounded across the region of nearly 70 million people. Ukraine-Russia crisis: Western governments put their forces on alert as tension rise

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has prompted one of the biggest mobilisations of Western forces in Europe in generations, but it is a delicate balancing act. The West fears Moscow is preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the Kremlin says it is countering decades of NATO expansion eastwards. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula caught allied Western forces off guard. With European security once again at stake, the NATO alliance wants its presence firmly felt.
