One-quarter of central African rainforest could be gone by 2050

Rainforests in central Africa are rapidly disappearing due to logging and mining. It is one of the issues on the agenda at the One Forest Summit, under way in Gabon. The timber from these rainforests, now used to make furniture for people in wealthier countries, was once part of what has been called the planet’s “other lung” and a precious natural barrier to climate change. Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque reports from Pande in Cameroon’s Congo River Basin, where he met the Indigenous Pygmy people who call the forest home. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish – Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera – Check our […]

Chad declares emergency in east after ethnic killings

President Idriss Deby has declared a state of emergency in two eastern provinces after dozens of people were killed in intercommunal clashes earlier this month. The state of emergency will run for three months in Sila and Ouaddai regions where 50 people have died since August 9 in fighting between cattle herders and settled farmers, the president’s office said on Sunday. The government of Chad is deploying the military to these provinces. Al Jazeera’s Alexi O’Brien reports.
