Chile ex-president Sebastian Pinera dies in helicopter crash

Chile’s former President Sebastian Pinera, a billionaire tycoon who twice held the South American nation’s top job, has died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, his office said in a statement. It’s believed he was flying himself and three other passengers. The government has declared two days of national mourning for the 74-year-old who was president twice. While some Chileans remember him as a leader who improved the economy and led the country during the unprecedented rescue of trapped miners, others call him a murderer and accuse him of human rights violations against demonstrators during his second presidency. Gabriel Boric wins Chile’s presidential election

A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president. With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast. In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”. At 35, Boric is set to become Chile’s youngest-ever president.
