A left-wing legislator who rose to prominence during anti-government protests in Chile has been elected the country’s next president.
With almost 99 percent of polling stations reporting, Gabriel Boric won 56 percent of the votes, compared with 44 percent for his conservative opponent, Jose Antonio Kast.
In a model of civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognised defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating him on his “grand triumph”.
At 35, Boric is set to become Chile’s youngest-ever president.

If Boric does get his reforms through and by luck Chile’s Lithium and Copper mining sectors are still going strong your going to be entirely dependent on a strong commodities market and markets aren’t bullish forever, they are cyclical afterall. So when prices inevitably fall, (as they will) the government which will have a shortfall in revenue will be forced to inflate the currency to pay off all public debts that have been incurred and then (God forbid) hyper inflation will kick in. History will repeat itself in Latin America as it always does.

Yeah, but the thing is that even if he delivers on like 10% of his promises, it would still be better than the opposite candidate being elected and delivering on 10% of his promises. Also, a new constitution will be put in place during his administration (it’s a parallel process, not his project), so if this new constitution really is better than the current one, the balance at the end of his administration would be possitive anyway.

Nah. They both focussed on different things to a different degree. They both had impossible promises in their project and also achievable things. The thing is that Boric’s plan is more directed as bettering life quality for people in general and having a more equality. The other candidate’s plan was more focused on security and economic freedom, which isn’t really possible is there’s too much inequality.
