It is been nearly one week since a boat carrying about 700 refugees and migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea, off the Greek coast. Nine suspected people smugglers accused of playing a role in the tragedy are due to face court in the coming hours. The Greek coastguard has been criticised for not doing enough to save lives. Coastguards have recovered the bodies of at least 78 people, who drowned off the southern coast after their fishing boat sank. Operations are underway to find hundreds of others who are missing and feared dead. Survivors say the boat was carrying up to 700 migrants from several countries including Pakistan, Egypt and Syria. Three people suspected of human trafficking are under investigation. Caretaker Prime Minister Ioannis Sarmas has declared three days of national mourning. Mexico has accepted yet another group of refugees from Afghanistan which include 124 journalists and their families. They landed in Mexico City’s international airport on Wednesday morning where Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard welcomed them in person. Their arrival follows the successful evacuation of an Afghan girls’ robotics team to the country on Tuesday. Mexico has taken in migrants and refugees from Central America but some experts have voiced concern about its ability to give them proper care.
