Thousands of people have heeded calls by Mali’s military rulers for a nationwide protest against sanctions by the West African economic bloc, ECOWAS. The sanctions were imposed after the country’s military coup leader delayed elections – due next month – until 2025. Gambian police have fired tear gas to disperse supporters of a losing presidential candidate, who is refusing to concede defeat. The Electoral Commission declared incumbent Adama Barrow the winner, with 53 per cent of the vote.
