Russia floods: More than 10,000 homes submerged in the Urals

Parts of Russia including the Urals, the Volga and central areas have declared states of emergency, after some of the worst flooding in decades. The disaster has forced at least 6,500 people to leave their homes. In the southern Kurgan region, media say the flooding could affect at least 19,000 people. Meanwhile, people in Orsk are protesting against their local authorities for their handling of the situation — asking President Vladimir Putin for help. Flash floods hit western Rwanda, killing more than 100

The death toll in the flooding in western Rwanda has gone up to 127, according to the office of President Paul Kagame, as a rescue operation is under way to reach stranded people amid torrential rains. “Rescue interventions are ongoing in the most affected districts … in order to secure endangered citizens,” Kagame’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. UN agrees on role for Int’l Court of Justice in climate change

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu to seek an opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on what legal obligations nations are under to protect climate systems and people affected by climate change. Co-sponsored by 132 countries at the UN, the resolution was adopted on Wednesday by a consensus. The UN is now empowered to seek the ICJ’s opinion on what countries’ legal obligations are to protect current and future generations from climate change.
