The Israeli military says its ground forces have “encircled” the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip after 24 of its soldiers were killed in the enclave in its largest single-day toll in the three-month war. “Over the past day, troops carried out an extensive operation during which they encircled Khan Younis and deepened the operation in the area,” the military said in a statement on Tuesday, calling the city a stronghold of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. In the Gaza Strip, heavy Israeli bombardment struck extensively, encompassing land, air, and sea assaults. The southern region bore the brunt, particularly Khan Younis and Rafah city. More than 50 rockets have been launched from the direction of Gaza towards the city of Netivot, some 15km (9.3 miles) from the border. The Times of Israel and other Israeli media report it may be the largest rocket salvo in weeks. Footage posted on social media shows a building in Netivot severely damaged in the aftermath of the attack.
