Mozambique army says town attacked by fighters is now secure

Mozambique’s army says it has retaken control of the northern town of Palma from a group of fighters linked to ISIL (ISIS) that attacked it last month. A military spokesman says a significant number of fighters were killed during the operation. The UN says more than 20,000 people stayed in Palma despite the attack It is hoped those who left will be able to return home soon. Mozambique attack: ISIL claims responsibility for Palma violence

The ISIL (ISIS) group has claimed responsibility for an attack on the town of Palma in northern Mozambique, which left dozens of people dead and thousands missing. It said its fighters had seized the town in the gas-rich region after several days of fighting. Security forces are trying to secure Palma; the exact number of people killed, injured and unaccounted for – is still unknown. Armed groups have been launching attacks in the region since 2017. Dozens of ‘defenceless’ civilians killed in Mozambique attack

Mozambique’s military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma. A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing. A three-year conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced about 670,000 people, according to the United Nations. Mozambique struggles with armed groups as 300,000 displaced

Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. The World Food Programme says more than 300,000 people have fled the violence. Marawi siege: Philippine army kills two pro-ISIL commanders

Two top Philippine commanders of an armed alliance that have declared loyalty to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), have been killed, according to authorities, in a major blow to an ongoing armed rebellion in the country’s south. Isnilon Hapilon, the top commander of the Abu Sayyaf Group and Omarkhayam Maute of the Maute Group, as well as seven of their fighters, were killed on Monday, after military forces launched a major operation in the besieged city of Marawi, General Eduardo Ano, the top military commander, said in a press conference.
