Putin’s plan: What does partial mobilisation mean?

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a partial mobilisation after Moscow’s troops suffered losses in Ukraine. In a televised address on Wednesday, Putin warned Western nations supporting Ukraine that Moscow would defend itself with the might of all its vast arsenal if faced with a nuclear threat from the West. He also announced his support for planned referendums in Ukrainian territories under Russian control. Meanwhile, Ukrainian leaders are far from scared by the prospect of fighting a much larger army. Ukraine counter offensive: Fighting intensifies in Kherson region

In the south of Ukraine, there has been fierce fighting as Ukrainian forces tries to gain ground in a counteroffensive to retake ground occupied by Russian troops. Officials say it will not be a quick operation and are asking Ukrainians to be patient. The Ukrainian military has seen some modest victories in this counter offensive, retaking a handful of villages in the region, but has yet to mount a push to Kherson city where more fortified Russian defences await. Ukraine war: Kyiv’s forces pushing towards Russian-held Kherson

Ukraine’s president said his forces were advancing towards the southern region of Kherson, which Russia occupied early in the war. The President’s announcement comes as Ukrainian forces claim they have damaged two important bridges across the Dnipro River vital to the lines of supply to Russian troops in and around Kherson, Reuters reports. Ukraine is pushing ahead with efforts to restart grain exports, despite missile strikes on its biggest port on Saturday. Russia has admitted it launched the attack on Odesa, saying it was trying to hit military targets.
