The last French soldiers have left Niger after the country’s new rulers cancelled defence agreements and ordered the French ambassador to leave. On Thursday, France announced it was closing its embassy in the capital. Relations between the two countries broke down following a military coup on July 26. Three hundred trucks bringing supplies to landlocked Niger have arrived in the capital Niamey. The convoy was delayed at the border with Burkina Faso because of attacks by armed groups. Niger has been struggling with shortages since ECOWAS imposed sanctions over last month’s coup. But the supplies may not be enough. Niger’s coup leaders are accusing French troops of carrying out a plan to destabilise the country. They say French forces released ‘captured terrorists’ in the east of the country and French aircraft have violated its airspace. But no evidence has been provided.
