Kenyan soldiers have landed in the city of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as part of a regional peacekeeping mission to the region. Their arrival on Saturday comes as the M23 rebel group has surged across the DRC’s North Kivu province, capturing swaths of territory and inflaming regional tensions. This week, Kenya’s Parliament approved the deployment of about 900 soldiers to the DRC as part of a joint military force from the East African Community (EAC) bloc. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s army says more than 3,000 people have responded to a call by President Felix Tshisekedi for volunteers to help fight another armed group, M23. Kenyan President William Ruto says his country is sending more than 900 military personnel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to join a new regional force tasked with trying to calm deadly tensions fuelled by armed groups. Ruto on Wednesday called the mission “necessary and urgent” for regional security and said he and the DRC’s president had agreed on how Kenyan forces would work with Congolese and other forces on disarming rebels and peacekeeping in the country’s troubled east. Nearly 2,000 Ugandan soldiers have crossed into the Democratic Republic of the Congo to fight alongside troops there. The move is part of a joint operation against an armed group, the Allied Democratic Forces, which operates along the border of both countries and has been blamed for dozens of attacks. 0 Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an Italian policeman and their Congolese driver have been killed in an ambush on a World Food Programme convoy in the eastern DRC. Luca Attanasio was on a mission in North Kivu province, an area teeming with armed groups. No police or security forces accompanied them.
