Kenyan soldiers have landed in the city of Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as part of a regional peacekeeping mission to the region.
Their arrival on Saturday comes as the M23 rebel group has surged across the DRC’s North Kivu province, capturing swaths of territory and inflaming regional tensions.
This week, Kenya’s Parliament approved the deployment of about 900 soldiers to the DRC as part of a joint military force from the East African Community (EAC) bloc.

Sorry but SADC countries seem to be more organized than the EAC when it comes to issues like this. The SADC countries joined forces to rout out the terrorists from Northern Mozambique real quick. We need to see more EAC troops headed to the DRC to kick out the M23 rebels. But you guys there in the EAC seem disorganized. With Mozambique, they were invited and with the “outsider” tag, Rwanda was seen more as a neutral pacifier as opposed to say TZ or any of the immediate SADC neighbors who shares not only borders but cross border ethic ties. Same applies to Kenya’s peacekeepers in DRC as opposed to those from Rwanda or UG. As such Kenya goes into DRC as a neutral party.
War Diplomacy for lack of a better term,has to factor in local and regional dynamics leave alone the prevalent cultural nuances in certain localities.

For four decades, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly Zaire, has never witnessed peace since the assassination of Patrice Lumumba on January 17, 1961 in Lumumbashi.
Last week, Washington accused the Republic of Rwanda for the escalation of the crisis that has continued to torment neighbouring DRC where fighting has been going-on between government groups and rebels led by M23.
America warned Rwanda that its support for armed groups was unacceptable and reiterated its concern about the country’s perceived support for M23 rebels.
Already, Kenya is among other regional countries that have deployed troops to DRC, with Kenya sending a strong 900-army personnel to tackle armed groups in the strife-landlocked country.
However, reports reaching Nairobi from Goma indicate that the M23 rebels have sent a strong warning that should Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) fires at them, they will retaliate.
In the American State Department statement, USA said it encouraged countries in the region to work together to restore peace, security and peace, while respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
There has been a long-standing tiff between DRC and Rwanda which eventually saw Kinshasa expelling Rwandese ambassador to DRC in October this year.
Lack of peace in DRC has been blamed on the scramble for its vast minerals by the West who forment strife and animosity among locals. As a country, Kenya should be careful when dreading in the volatile DRC. Foreign interests in the US$200 trillion wealth in DRC has been the focus of the West.
Kenya should not take the warning from M23 lightly but serious for Kenyans don’t want to see bodies of their loved ones strewn in thickets of DRC and dead ones in coffins flown to Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
the Kenya defence is a disciplined force..they are not going bcoz of the vast wealth of congo to loot but to help bring sanity and peace so that the DRc people and the broader EAC can benefit…we Kenyans believe in business and congoleses with peace can bring business to the port of Mombasa..Not everyone is greedy like the french peace keepers of Niger and Mali
