Mongolia is heading to the polls this week for the first time since its constitution was overhauled to broaden representation. Experts believe weak opposition to the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) will result in little change or serious measures to address recent corruption scandals. Despite reforms designed to increase the inclusion of smaller parties, public frustration remains high due to prominent corruption cases and a perceived lack of accountability. With no strong challenger, the MPP is expected to maintain its dominance, leaving many sceptical about the prospects for significant political change. Ukraine’s pro-democracy, pro-Europe demonstrations in Maidan Square a decade ago marked the “first victory” in its war with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared on the anniversary of the popular protest movement. The “Revolution of Dignity” protests ultimately led to the ouster of Kremlin-backed President Victor Yanukovych and gave space to the rise of a new generation of anticorruption, pro-democracy movement leaders.
