After five days of a chaotic political stalemate, Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected speaker of the US House of Representatives. McCarthy’s bid was blocked by hardline Republican party members who repeatedly voted against him. But after fifteen ballots he managed to capture the speaker’s gavel.
