Sudanese struggle to get basic commodities amid conflict

Taking advantage of relative calm, many residents in Khartoum and the neighbouring city of Omdurman emerged from their homes to seek food and water, queueing at bakeries and grocery stores, after days of being trapped inside by the fighting between the army and the rapid support forces. Some inspected shops or homes that had been destroyed or looted. Gunfire and loud explosions could be heard in the city, though residents said clashes were in more limited pockets, mainly around the military’s headquarters and the Republican Palace in central Khartoum and around bases in Omdurman across the Nile River. Tigray conflict highlights border dispute between Ethiopia, Sudan

Sudan says it has played an important role in helping refugees from Ethiopia despite its own economic difficulties. But this crisis is not the only challenge posed by the conflict. The al-Fashaga triangle, where most of the refugees are being hosted, covers an area of about 250 square kilometres and it has around 600,000 acres of fertile land. Sudan says it is an integral part of its territory because it lies west of the line drawn by colonial Britain. But Ethiopia maintains an army presence there and Ethiopian farmers exploit large parts of the land. A joint committee has been trying for years, with little success, to demarcate a border. […]
