US homeless crisis escalates as rent prices rise

In the United States, and in California, there is increasing alarm over the number of over-fifties who find themselves living on the streets. They make up most of the more than half a million people there who are homeless. Many have been forced from their homes because they are unable to pay large increases in their rent. Battle intensifies in Panjshir as Taliban, resistance claim gains

The battle for control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley is showing no sign of easing, with Taliban and resistance fighters both claiming to have the upper hand. The region, walled off by mountains north of Kabul, is the last holdout against Taliban rule. There are reports of more fierce fighting between the National Resistance Front (NRF) – made up of militias and former Afghan security force members – and Taliban forces. Both sides claim they have inflicted heavy losses on each other. Taliban says resistance group made “irrational demands”

US: Hurricane Ida kills one, knocks out power across New Orleans

Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened. Afghanistan war: 20 years of US presence ends with urgent evacuations

After 9/11, United States President George W. Bush launched a ‘global war on terror.’ Within weeks, the Taliban was toppled for providing safe haven for Al al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. In May 2011, US Special forces killed Osama bin Laden in neighbouring Pakistan. As the war continued, diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement intensified. US commander in Afghanistan says steps for withdrawal have begun

US Florida flood: Fears wastewater pond could leak, spilling toxic waste

A leak at a wastewater pond is causing concern that a “wall of water” could overwhelm hundreds of homes in the US state of Florida. Officials in Manatee County declared a state of emergency on Sunday and ordered that the area around the Piney Point reservoir site be evacuated. The large pond contains phosphorus and nitrogen from an old phosphate plant and the leak in the dam was discovered about a week ago.
