A leak at a wastewater pond is causing concern that a “wall of water” could overwhelm hundreds of homes in the US state of Florida.
Officials in Manatee County declared a state of emergency on Sunday and ordered that the area around the Piney Point reservoir site be evacuated.
The large pond contains phosphorus and nitrogen from an old phosphate plant and the leak in the dam was discovered about a week ago.

These red states does sadly prefer going black. Coal, oil and gas usage for the profitability and preventing having to transition into more of a sustainable direction tends to be preferred. Many will have to pay for that whether they like it or not. Doesn’t look good when politicians are in bed with donors and rich corporations.
Florida is the swamp. Drain the swamp, build some more homes. Fisherman and crabbers living off government pensions ain’t worth it.

Deregulation and very little insight into areas such as waste management, water production, and meeting people’s basic needs in a secure manner is gonna lead to these problems reoccurring time and time again. Letting profits dictate everything is clearly not always the answer. I wonder if republicans ever will acknowledge that or if their rich donors and lobbyists will keep them in the dark at the expense of everyone.

They have more deaths, of course, but the population in those countries are growing rapidly anyway. These people have to stop it. They can’t give basic care even for the current population. This is one reason you can’t get rid of EPA regulations and give companies a pass on their responsibility to the environment. They just closed the plant and walked away with no plan or responsibility towards cleaning up and disposing of the contaminated water.
