Sierra Leone court allows ex-President Koroma to go abroad for medical care

A Sierra Leone court has allowed former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is charged with treason, to travel abroad on medical grounds. Koroma, 70, was charged early this month with four offences for his alleged role in a failed military attempt to topple the West African country’s government in November. Patrolling the seas: Senegal navy seeks to intercept migrant boats

Spanish authorities say nearly 32,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands by sea from West Africa this year – higher than the previous record posted in 2006. La Palma volcano destroys hundreds of homes, displaces thousands

More than 6,000 people have now been forced from their homes in La Palma, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. Parts of the area have been engulfed in lava from a volcano which erupted on Sunday. Many people lost their homes, and there is anger after a minister appeared to encourage so-called disaster tourists to visit.
