Spanish authorities say nearly 32,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands by sea from West Africa this year – higher than the previous record posted in 2006.
The Canary Islands have become the main destination for migrants from African countries trying to reach Europe.
Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque embarked with a Senegalese navy ship on a mission to stop migrants reaching Spain and brings us this report.

Always so sad to see this happening. Many risking their lives. Why dont they stay home. Are they a minority group, Tamils being persecuted by peaceful Buddhists? Africans that have been convinced by people traffickers they are welcome wherever they flee? I will never forget watching Hotel Rwanda as millions were massacred by their own people as the west divided them by stature and appearance. Al Jazeera often criticizes the West, but it never suggests that these refugees seek refuge in Middle Eastern countries. Middle Eastern countries are rich and have peaceful and benevolent religions. They should go to the Middle East.
