Jacinda Ardern’s Labour Party has won more than half of the parliamentary seats.
It is an unprecedented result that could see her govern without any coalition partners.

As a kiwi watching this, it’s decent journalism, everything you needed to know in under three minutes with very little spin. Would’ve been nice to have seen a mention of David Seymour and the ACT party gaining 10 seats in parliament but whatever
Act probably got those votes off of disillusioned national voters, national has been a mess for a long time really, act would be a more effective opposition leader to what national has produced so far.
and this is coming from someone who identifies more with the center left, but i see the value of our political system having an effective opposition, and an effective opposition in my eyes is not one that has to go out and hamstring everything the acting govt tries to do, not if its something constructive to the good of the country. A democratic system needs checks and balances.

No one should be declaring victory just yet. NZ is an island nation in the bottom of the world, sparsely populated I mean there’s more people in Brooklyn NY than there is in NZ and they have had new cases and I give Arden tons of credit for weathering the crisis relatively better than many nations.
The evidence from across the world strongly suggests Covid can be contained if a government takes decisive action AND people cooperate and follow rules. New Zealand crushed the curve back in March. Then, two months ago, a new cluster was found (possibly tied to infected frozen packages). A more local stay-at-home order was implemented, and Covid was crushed again. There are at least a dozen countries in East & Southeast Asia who have contained Covid and have only a fraction of the death rate of Europe, Latin America and the US. Vietnam has 100 million people and have only 30-40 deaths due to one mini-outbreak. Heck…China was the first country to get Covid and they successfully stomped it out not only the first time, but in every cluster they discovered since. Countries that are failing are due to having weak/ineffectual governments and/or populations who simply won’t cooperate for the greater social good. They can’t blame anyone but themselves when so many countries have succeeded.

I am from New Zealand and am proud to have Jacinda Ardern as my leader. In the past year that has been dominated by Covid, we can finally compare how competent and effective every government in the world are by looking at the death rates. New Zealand is one of only a handful of western democracies to have passed the Covid test. Nearly every country in Europe, Latin America plus the US failed spectacularly. The Labour Party earned their right to be elected by a landslide (whereas the world hopes Americans will throw out Trump). NZ may be only a small country, but its government listens to scientists/doctors and is COMPETENT at doing its job! On Covid, the approach NZ has managed to take, and the results it has gotten, has more similarities with places like Vietnam, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia than the countries it is normally peered with.

Too early for comparisons. The covid virus arrived in NZ in late summer when most of our fatalities occurred. We had it through winter with 1 loss, and now its spring. The northern hemisphere is in autumn (fall), they haven’t even started their flu season. The future does not look good for them.
