Soldiers have opened fire on demonstrators gathered at a protest site in Lagos that has been the epicentre of widespread rallies against police brutality in Nigeria, according to several witnesses.
Nigeria’s Lagos is in a 24-hour lockdown and millions of people are under curfew across the country.
Demonstrators have been on the street for days over police brutality and some senior politicians are supporting them.
Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Abuja, Nigeria.

Prior to the homicide, some men came to remove the CCTV camera in that location and for those who know lekki toll gate in Lagos well would understand that it used to be well lighted BUT the lights were put off before the massacre which shows that it was well planned, the demands were clear
1. Put an End to SARS operations due to the compromise of the unit(Police)
2. Reform the entire police force
3. Better welfare for the police themselves and also citizens
4. Engage reform in all sectors of the economy and many more
Which seems to be asking for too much, it’s heartbreaking looking at the number of lives lost yet the killing is still on-going in other parts of the country

Our primary “mumuism” is the worship of the Caucasian leading to the belief that a geographical entity created by imperialists is somehow sacrosanct. If the UK which created Nigeria divided, how can “ONE NIGERIA” be sacrosanct? The utter anarchy in Nigeria will never end since it is the direct result of the absence of a common ethos. The only way forward is the emergence of new but more cohesive independent Nations, perhaps within a “Commonwealth of Nigeria”.
