In order to heal the ravages of suicidal depression, one can’t face one’s demons alone. It can’t be done without the surrender to a higher power. Lots of loving support from others is an important first step but ultimately one has to muster the courage to know the unknowable and that takes relentless work on one’s self and one’s relationships. Pills from a bottle are OK for worst-case episodes, but for true growth, it takes a genuine commitment to battle one’s self practically as well as spiritually. The two are inseparable.

@J R Thank you for the kind remark, JR. I had a 20-year-old male cousin with his whole life before him. He had a lot going for him including a wealthy, prominent family. He chose to lock himself in his parent’s garage and start the family car. Need I say more? The problem with suicide is people get that you are hurting and that you need help, but suicide takes you to a place of no return. That’s the sad part. Realizing that you are in trouble and seeking support is the way to move forward. Realizing you are in trouble and killing yourself profoundly punishes both you and your loved ones forever. One cannot reverse death, unfortunately. It has the last word. Interesting we both have the same initials. Sorry, we couldn’t have connected under more pleasant circumstances. Be well. 5 years ago I lost my partner of 19 years who was tortured with depression and no-polar schizo affected disorder. His demons finally won. I found that most at risk were thought to be so aware that Suicide couldn’t happen. My shared sorrow to the Raskins & all those who knew Tommy.

@J R um wow, open your own eyes, being a Christian makes you an authority on exactly nothing. It doesn’t give you some higher standing or mean you are more committed to morality than the next person. The only thing that is broken is the demented thought process that makes people believe they are entitled to everything under the Sun with no effort put forth on their own part. What’s broken is that if it weren’t for double standards, democrats would have no standards at all. What’s broken is that 39% of the electorate, 17% of those being democrats and 30% independent voters, believe this election was rigged. That’s nearly half of voters. Rather than conduct forensic audits in the states in question, verifying the veracity and restoring confidence in the most important event that occurs in this Republic… we have registered democrats, who account for less than 1/3rd of the population, blocking every attempt to get answers. But these are problems common to life and can be easily remedied by decent people. Unfortunately, there is no decency on the political left.

I have mental and physical pain for 40yrs now and I find THC helps will all ailments.

@J R try THC liquid drops in your morning coffee and you’ll feel that the pain is not as bad.I call it God’s painkiller and antidepressant and it’s not man-made. I don’t drink or smoke cigarettes but I’ve been in a few accidents and I find that it makes my world better

Heartwrenching. So incredibly sad. Not to take away from the gravity of this tragedy, but society would be well served to stop talking about depression as something to be fought against. Embracing the dark is the only way back into the light. The entire world is facing calamities we couldn’t have imagined a few years ago. It’s completely normal to be depressed and despondent.

Everyone, even you, are someone’s child. As such, we should give the parents and others in their lives time to grieve their loss. This includes the respect that we all learned as children. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

I’m not sure help will stop some of us from committing suicide. I struggle too. Like Tommy I have endless resources and faith but even with that I sit in parking lots with my gun ready to do myself in. I cry and I pray and I think of the pain I will cause my other. I don’t go thru with it and dig from a fountain of self confidence deep inside me that says I can make a difference for someone else if I can make it for another day. I try to imagine a time long ago when I was strong, I think of memories, I listen to inspirational music. It’s really hard. I’m still here.
