The Philippines is looking to revive its dormant nuclear power plant to solve its energy crisis.
Experts say it could reduce soaring power prices by up to 70 percent.
The Bataan Nuclear Power plant was built in the 1970s and was the first in Southeast Asia. But it never opened.
It was mothballed and past presidents have been hesitant to recommission it, saying that it was a reminder of the excesses of former President Ferdinand Marcos’ regime.
Al Jazeera’s Jamela Alindogan reports from Bataan in the northern Philippines.

#Philippines #Bataan #BataanNuclearPlant
It’s about time, Bangladesh have their own nuclear power plant in place,
nuclear on their armpit
Clean energy doesn’t exist.
That’s a horrible idea, the Philippines is literally on a fault line
@J3LL05H0T
If you’re talking about the constructjion cost when building the reactor, it can be challenging due to enormous size. However, some companies start to develop the modular reactor, reducing the difficulties when assembling the site they planned to construct.
Moreover, I worry about the waste after refueling. I don’t know where our government planning the right site to bury the waste without contaminating into groundwater.
We have no choice when the electricity price go soar inevitably, facing with dilemma of decisions. Otherwise, we have to face another unforseen adversaries.
@Jaret Jose Ulanday anything our government does is suspect, just look at how the LRT was managed…so much promised and now a joke
@J3LL05H0T
Then there is something wrong the transaction when dealing the project. It needs to track when there is a conspicuous suspicion where the money goes.
@Jaret Jose Ulanday given Philippine politics…good luck, it’ll never trickle down which is why we shouldn’t be in charge of a nuclear power plant until we can prove that we can manage something properly and up to code
@J3LL05H0T
But we have right to sacrifice it when facing adversaries such rotating brownout which is affecting the economy of our country. And not to mention jevons paradox: if the product is more efficient, there are more likely to consume more.
And government promises cannot guarantee to deliver without any adversities and adversaries.
What do you do with spent nuclear waste. There has never been a proven safe means of disposal.
Meltdowns are a very serious issue that affects not only local people but the world’s population.
Ultimately its the civilians that must pay for the so called clean up but really you cannot clean it up.
One the genie is out of the bottle its never going back in.
Disasters like Fukushima dont go away.
People’s memory are very short.
They forget Chernobyl is still an on going issue.
Recent fires mean again Europe is exposed to deadly radiation.
Nuclear contamination last forever.
Radioactive isotopes are extremely long lived.
It takes ten half lives before all radiationis gone.
30 year half life is 300 years.
Some other isotopes are measured in billions of years.
9 billion years is 90 billion years.
You must manage nuclear waste for hundreds of millions of years in many instances.
Some nuke waste has very long half lives.
You must pay for decommissioning and waste issues.
Disaster are paid for by taxpayers for extremely long time.
Philipines cannot afford nuclear.
Don’t dont have the safety culture for nuclear.
Nor can they afford to renovate nuclear which could be very expensive.
Nuclear power require extremely educated people to run and maintain.
Its no place for irresponsible people.
If for example you sacrife a chicken to the gods then safety culture could completely destroy the Philippines and make it uninhabitable for a very long time.
Nuclear is great base load power but the reality is quite terrorfying.
Greed is no place for nuclear.
If anything goes wrong at a nuclear plant then through lack of maintaining it then the price could be unacceptably high but you have no choice but to pay for it.
State could become bankrupt.
Any kind of earthquake could become another Chernobyl or worse.
Ever since I was a kid this is the issue. Those paranoid yellowtards keep on blocking it from opening ’cause their power plants will lose money.
Lmao almost no Filipino Nuclear Physicists here all are either working abroad or not being studied at all.
They all left after BNPP was decommissioned.
shame, not used… it’s technology and design, tho old, was also meant for long term use in mind… with possibility of upgrades
It’s long overdue. Let’s get it on without buts and ifs. It’s high time to put that white elephant into assets.
let the construction begin!
make nuclear bombs as well
And nuclear missiles, too. I just hope they will use the nuke bombs and missiles as the last resort in war. I don’t want the world to happen with Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 6 & 9 of the year 1945 to happen for any reason at all unless the protocols needed to launch or detonate them are strictly validated for them to start the semi-armaggedon on our enemies.
The fear of the unknown- the reason why the Philippines was tagged as the sick man of Asia. A lot of pinoys are also against political and economic reform despite not knowing what it is and how it works. They quickly assume that the purpose of such reforms is to extend the term of office of those in the government.
Our leaders don’t explore innovative ways, they are content in mere conventional ways, hence the mishaps and vulnerability of tragedies multiplied when it could’ve been mitigated by strategic means. We’re really falling behind
A lot of filipinos put religion before progress. Facts 😂 Also, 1987 constitution, protectionism and mini me oligarchs throughout the country. Hard to do business with the PH.
Conservative are a fool anywhere they are, they only see danger in progress, not the benefit in it. Off course the will be risk moving forward, thats life, but you’re not going anywhere sitting still.
Preceding administrations were hesitant to recommission the project knowing it would diminish the demand of current sources of electricity owned by their colleagues. It is a conflicting interest whether for public interest or otherwise on the part of the authority.
It was politics that killed the Bataan nuclear plant while it was still in the womb
Good job president….open up soon two thumbs up
Prwsident bago ka umalis kailngan ma i open muna yan bataan power plant
Madmi talaga kokontra sa pangulo dpat nga sumoporta nlng sila for the good of the country…senator gatchalian ano b yan?
It’s stop because of stupid cory aquino.
Yeah use nuclear is enviromental friendly, you can also import nuclear from your neighbor country Indonesia transport will be cut price if from Europe or china
pinapayaman nio lng c pangilinan tapos andami reklamo pag mtaas kuryente..gatchalian Wala k nmn problema sa pmbyad ng kuryente eh..
Marcos? or Meralco with its minions in senate, congress and media abs doesn’t want to loose profit….
Gatchalian statement sucks.
Dahil sa anti Marcos kaya tayo naghirap
Tangina mo Cory
I mean, nuclear energy is clean and it outputs a good amount of energy than solar and wind with little space and it’s not that dangerous so it’s kinda a dumb move not to have a nuclear power plant
not to mention that renewables are only good for peak power not base load power. we need BNPP for a stable, high capacity base load power plant.
Recommission.
Thank you pres marcos
Well, there are reports that Russia is offering their help to rebuild the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant and it will be a great help because Russian Ambassador for the Philippines said: Russia wants to help Philippines to have Nuclear Power Plant so that they will have cheap and effective electric supply for their country.
1st in southeast Asia, na itinayo ang planta… Dahil sa aquino administration pinatigil.. Klaseng pagiisip yan…
Well, you are historically correct.
Yeah it was the 1st, but it doesn’t mean that it was running as smoothly as other power plants. It was covered in controversy as the BNPP was built on near a major geological fault line, both covered by the Mt. Mayon and Mt. Natib. It was also mothballed since the requirements to operate the powerplant required extensive maintenance that would drain up the country’s economy, unless it was privatized of course. There were also safety concerns during testing and they found right around 4,000 defects in the power plant.
@Flare Animo We can find thousands of reasons dude, honestly, but let see what Duterte’s admin can offer.
@Ryan S Much better if we listen to the Philippine nuclear institute rather than politicians, mate.
tokamak
Nuclear should be the future, but whether such an old plant is feasible is a unknown story.
That old plant are dangerous, better modified it properly.
Because lopezes owns meralco
not gonna happen thats for sure
‘Twas filled with corruption with overpriced uranium fuel rods and others. Moreover, the site is sitting over an earthquake fault line. It has nothing to do with the late dictator (praised by Reagan as most democratic leader). The intention was good but corruption took over.
Excesses of Marcos? Agree. Ferdinand had in excess ideas and vision for the Philippines. Those who came after him had little or none until the yellows were defeated.
The plant is too old… Philippines must go for Thorium as fuel instead of Uranium.
Slap to the face of the first yellow administration which scrapped this source of energy.
👍👍👍
It will be
Fun fact did you know meralco owned by government? Did you know who give meralco to lopez clan guese what the SAINT CORY
its because former madam Aquino all the way to her son’s govt term favors its alliance with private sectors for more business interest bigtime,,,, the result Philippines is still one of the highest power rates in Asia ,,, we the public/consumers still suffers up to this day!!!! no more Aquino please……….. and their political yellow party suckers with its lies lies!!!!
When will Thailand have a nuclear power plant… Thailand depends too much on Laos electricity…
risky move, philipines are earthquake prone
Open it, this is stupidity in the time we have right now electricity price is high.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. That’s not going to be easy. There are factors to consider such as environmental, health, economical and so on.
Now is the good time to open that Bataan Nuclear Power Plant because of oligrachs and yellow party and aka environmentalist never want to open that because they are afraid in their power plant to have competition and will close but the truth our energy power is the most expensive Energy in Asia and the World they give wrong allegations because they are largely benefitted they said is not safe if they seebit had certificate passed many times and proven its far in earthquake fault line .. i believe its time masses worth benefit cheap electricity ease our long burden paying expensive electricity
Sabi ng mga edsa people wag dw buksan yan sabi ni mother earth demon nilang si Corykong dahil sasabog dw yan pag lumindol dahil di dw mganda pag kakagawa. Napaka siraulo talaga. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 ano kayo ngaun mga edsa people.
former presidents excuses are so lame and unprofessional. imagine not choosing the best for your country because you’re so hurt in the past, like wtf? this is not a drama ,this is real life smh
The real reason they dont want to revive that Nuclear power plant is because it was built by Marcos. They dont want Marcos’ legacy to be restored on how it should be. Shame on U Yellow Shi+s!!!
Our stupid citizen support Liberals to ruin all the MARCOS project and Filipino Dream and now “Poverty”
The Aquinos don’t want it to operate because it will only remind the Filipinos about the Marcos’ contribution to nation building.
He was epic but also stole my money.
Imagine not opening a nuclear power plant because it reminded of a dictator and not thinking of the people who actually need cheaper electricity
Truess
The Best moves of president if is operate this nuclear power plant.
YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS
they dont open it because of the incompetence and insecurity of the aquino admin. those mofos destroyed my country
The Philippines is still the sick man of Asia. In 5 years Vietnam will overtake the Philippines.
Long overdue! Turn on the engines!
Renewable energy is plenty. Every rooftop can become solar power source but the law limits the net metering capability of residential houses. Also the electric distributors would not want the net metering scheme, no limit, for all.
Too old to restore need a lot of money better to build new one,,,
Half a century old relic. It would be a bad Idea.
willing to spend billions of dollars for a nuke plant but not for a hydroelectric dam? well that’s absolutely sad.
Getting working!!! Clean energy and endless power!!
Talk to dilawans and that’s what you get, a biased reasoning
Well my only last concern is thoose dirty teror group
Maybe we can use the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant to use for energy and electricity, while saving some of them for future nuclear bombs and missiles commissioned with the strict protocols of the United Nations, fi possible, and the preparation for disaster preparedness in case there maybe a nuclear-relaed disasters for all, too.
KALABAN NIYO PILIPINO
This plant is outdated and most countries have replaced them or in the process of replacing them with modern, efficient and safe nuclear plants. Instead of spending P 1.2 billion pesos to update this plant, authorities should think of buying one or two modern nuclear plants at safe locations ( not in an earthquake zone at the Bataan location ), like in an island or a floating facility at sea, for the safety of everyone. The government may retrofit this Bataan plant with the use natural gas or other clean or renewable energy so that if it is destroyed by an earthquake, a few people may die instead of thousands due to deadly radiation, like in the Chernobyl or Fukushima plants.
It’s impossible because Duterte is also one of the yellow syndicate like Aquino. Oligarch capitalist don’t want a cheap product they could sell. They want much more higher profits as possible.
I am not against Nuclear Power plant rather i totally Support it but the only problem is the Core still there after all these years cause if not then GG a Nuclear Reactor core can go up 6 Billion the cheapest to trillions of Dollars
South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore move ahead meanwhile Philippines left behind. Maybe it’s the government.
this power plant looks very old and outdated. Philippines need built new one with modern technology.
Open up that Plant
No to Marcos ako pero sana gamitin ito, pera parin to ng taong bayan wag ng ipulitika
On it now
Someday it will be active in service.
Bobong Cory
Nuclear Power generates more power than renewable energy sources (like solar, wind and tidal), while also not creating any CO2 emissions, so aside from the nuclear waste, if operated properly, nuclear energy is actually quite environmentally friendly.
As for the nuclear waste, the United States buries their nuclear waste out in the Arizona and California deserts, while Russia dumps theirs into Lake Karachay (a small lake reserved for nuclear waste).
The Philippines could just pay the US or Russia to store their nuclear waste either out in the Arizona desert or Lake Karachay.
Lots of Filipino “Internet Experts” on the comment sections.
This is one of the ex-pres. marcos’s project, the powerplant was never been operational because of aquino being greedy with quanco to instead use geothermal energy just for them to split up some money. I hope these yellow shts don’t win elections anymore, they never helped the country and never give pilipinos convinient life.
Really Senator Gatchalian?
“…were gonna jumpstart a plan which is old and controversial, we don’t want to start our nuclear program in the wrong foot, we want to start it in the right foot.”
Iiwan na lang to at gagawa ng bago kahit may paraan naman para mabuhay to at hindi masayang? dahil LANG sa luma ito at ma-kontrobersyal. SMH…
Politics aside, it’s a greener form of energy.
Imagine building a nuclear power plant only to display hahahaha wtf philippines kaya pa?
Dilawan talaga si Sherwin
Ala nmn kyo mgawa.bulsa nyo pakapal ng pakapal.inuuto nyo presidente.dae nyo pa backlog
Bcoz of aquino’s clan philppne suffr.
Philippines need atleast 15 of this anyway to lower the bill by 5 to 15 %. anyway … but time is morw essential. 15 of this in 30 years. then that will lower our electicity by up to 70%
Last I looked nuclear is the only energy provider we have that can be carbon negative. Wind turbines are not green energy in my eyes when they only last about 20 years and then they go to the landfill same thing with solar panels.
E MRT nga di magpatakbo ng mabuti.. Asa pa kayo sa Nuke Plant.. Bwahhahahha
For every solutions Duterte and his supporter offers, the Left has a problem.
Malapit lapit kami jan. For sure nmn pinag aralan muna yan bago gawin.✌️
