Google has threatened to make its search engine unavailable in Australia over plans by the government to make tech giants pay for news content. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told the company, “We don’t respond to threats.”

Do you know how much Murdoch is asking as compensation – $2 billion/year just for linking the headlines, no clicks necessary – that’s not including other news companies. Even at 5% of that, do you think someone like duck duck go has the capacity to pay that amount?
That’s only the money, we’re not even talking about the algorithms, which by the way most of the small independent search engines shares that of Google. Do you think Google will allow these company to share their assets with the News Conglomerate?

This legislation won’t just affect Google and Facebook. It will pretty much make it hard for any search engine to operate in Australia. If you use DuckDuckGo they will be subject to the same law that is being proposed. It is a stupid law being proposed by our stupid government who don’t care for the little person.

Hold on a second, google’s web indexing is free, you only pay for things like advanced SEO and premium GSUITE. In regards to Facebook its a free platform, the only cost would be to buy a sponsored ad spot. So they are really not losing any money hence they are not entitled to compensation

Interesting. Uber did this before threated some countries. It’s time to society to think about other models to these companies. Of course there are choices beyond the present model. It’s not simply. But constructing others and more variable search engines, for example, it’s super interesting.
I’m nothing in this debate, but I dont agrre with Tim Bernes-Lee. The creators of Google in their article of 1998 describing search engines, I think also (I can be wrong) to present in an academic event in Australia, said that the search engines would be functioning better in institutions like academia and would be necessary to harmful practices on advertsing to establish and mantain a balance in the search engines.
That is my thought.
