Raul Castro, and before him, his brother Fidel, ruled the island for 60 years. Whether he remains in the Communist Party in a lesser capacity, or as an elder statesman, it is unlikely to mean his influence has ended.

As I sit here and read some of these comments I ask myself if some of these people have ever really done any research on my country. Do they not know that there are over 3 million Cubans that have had to immigrate to all over the world because we were simply against the communist regime. So they would fire us from our jobs, sanción us and do repudiation rallies in front of our homes for the simple reason of having a difference of opinion. I won’t even begging to count the hundreds of thousands that have lost their lives trying to escape and the many that were killed by them in the attempts. There are currently over 130 political prisoners in my country and many of them are tortured physically and mentally on a daily basis. Please be sensible to the mothers who have had to buried their children as to those who’s children are currently in prisons all over the Island. Communism has only destroyed our country our Doctors are beings sold as slaves by the government while they pay them pennies and make the Castro family richer every day. Our hospital and homes are tumbling down while their grandchildren are vacationing in Monaco on luxury yachts and buying million dollar homes in Spain and many other countries. The world has been a conspirator to the millions of lives affected by this 63 years of this Communist regime.
You can get fired in capitalism for difference of opinion.

Russia is now under sanctions and it’s not even close as the situation of cuba. Sanctions only work if your own economy is already garbage as now everyone can still do business with China and several EU nations that don’t follow the sanctions and a lot of the rest of the world anyway. Usa sanctions can just stop a country from doing business with them and the few nato members that follow the request.
There are many new cars built in China available for sale in cuba, yet even chinese cars are too expensive for Cubans.
Cambodia suffered an extreme genocide and communism until the 90s and now an unskilled Cambodian worker makes more than 3 times the salary of a cuban.
Why? Because even the corrupt government of cambodia understood that low taxes together with allowing people doing business easily and allowing the freedom to use any currency you want will bring business and economic growth. With the growth they raised the minimum salary from 50$ a month in year 2000 (effectively just after the end of the communis rebel groups) to 250$ today. That’s 20% minimum salary growth every year and it was done without ruining the economy but based on supply and demand for workers.
Now it’s easy to find university graduates making 1000$ a month. In cuba they still make around 50$ a month since the last 30 years…
If cuba could just copy paste a simple and effective tax system like hong Kong, allow easy private ownership of property as well a simple and clear customs duty system they would triple the salaries in 5 years for sure. Everyone will want to come to invest there.
Tax revenue would boom.
Now the system is so stupid, the salaries are nothing because nobody besides the government can do any real business in cuba. And the government is extremely inefficient, paying extremely low salaries to everyone often for pointless jobs, like selling goods in a store with empty shelves. Most people barely do anything at work because every position is extremely overstaffed just to keep everyone busy. So everyone spends their life pretending to work with the government pretends to pay them.
Cheap tobacco,alcohol and TV to keep the people happy enough not to revolt.
