In Kenya, about 200,000 new bikes hit the road every year, nearly all run on petrol, but that could be about to change.
Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb reports from the town of Homa Bay, where a recently developed electric motorbike is creating a buzz.

Yes yes yes!
Promotion at it’s best hope it is genuine 🙏
Yes, we are trying to be as genuine and authentic as possible. Thanks!
Sorry Tesla the Chinese were quicker than you lol
I thought they were Swedish
@Dotcando They might be a Swedish company that designed the bike, but have the bikes manufactured as Complete Knockdown Kits and then have them assembled in Kenya.
We take pride in having designed, developed and manufactured our motorcycle in Kenya. This is very different from many other producers. We do however indeed get some parts from China.
❤️❤️❤️👏👏🙏
Homabay
If you know, you know 🙌
It is good to see actual real results from companies making EV Motorcycles – as opposed to ALYI which is trying to scam US investors and not producing results.
Thanks this means a lot to us! Glad for your support.
@Opibus Wow and you guys actually engage with social media – good for you and best of luck to you!!
Excellent!
Thanks 😉
Wakandan Kangz!
Seeing how fast an electric scooter can go in comparison, defeats the objective.. i think more importantly is range, & can they charge on a home electricity outlet? Then theres the battery performance after years of use, because the cost of replacing a battery pack would be out of the range of most peoples budget. Even if the drive motor goes out, its probably an entire unit replacement, which i believe wont be cheap or easy to find in years to come
I don’t know the numbers (distance and cost) and I’m sure you don’t either so we can’t draw a conclusion that easily. But the point is if more people use ebikes, the cheaper the cost to produce including the parts. I’m sure the first fuel cars and motorcycles were very expensive when they were first introduced. Another point is they are trying to make every part locally which not only makes it cheaper but provides jobs to many.
Economies of scale will kick in with mass adoption for any product and with local engineering and production this could become a powerful export for Kenya.
We work with the best possible suppliers to make sure we have cheap and quality parts. Right now we have a range of 160km on our next generation motorcycle and it can be charged in a home outlet. 😉
I smell ECO BS propaganda.
We arent trying to make you feel this way, you should come by our workshop and see what you think.
What’s the name of the company and how do I invest in its stonk? I want to ride it to the moooooon. 🙌🏾💎🚀🚀🚀🌚
NOT $ALYI that one is a scam. Feel free to ask me about it.
Good for Kenyan! Sunshine all year long, what a good way to utilize it.
Yes indeed, we couldn’t agree more.
opbius –
now that is a cool name for a bike.
Great to hear you like it. 😉
Continue enjoying the ride
🙌
In Europe it’s so hard get a driving licence and the one they use instead is 50cc and the Insurance is more expensive than the petrol and the Petrol is like 3 time higher than the rest of the World, so it end up very few use motorcykels in Europa!
idiocrazy at work!
Yes that is unfortunate. This is why we want to build motorcycles locally in Kenya!
i was watching the grand tour where a tvs motorbike just broken in pieces. i was shocked. tvs make nice bikes in india and they do last longer
As a gentleman mentioned in the video they don’t use original spare parts , they tend to be expensive..may be that explains the difference in quality.
Yeah, its a real shame some of the imported motorcycles, we are hoping to change this with ours. 🙌
Kenyan companies should start manufacturing these bikes for overseas markets.
That is our goal! We are working day by day to export to the world.
Wow congratulations to everyone love you all my beautifully country
Yes Kenya is one stunning country.
Kenya is a corrupt and failing coutry.
cmon, typical Somalian comment….why do hate Kenyans so much
😁
Guy with the coffin on his bike is in-sane!! So is the torque on an electric motorcycle. The more electric bikes there are, the better the tech will get. I’m looking forward to it. 😀
Haha, indeed, insane. Yes electric will for sure be the future, at least what we are hoping for!
Aljazeera should get a local narrater. This guy is a British
They should indeed 🇰🇪
Aljazeera should get a local narrater. This guy is a British. He portrays Africa as poor. Then the Swedish company should be banned. That is something we can do easily
Sorry, to hear this, we cant do anything about the narrator but we are glad to say our company is founded and situated in Nairobi, with over 70 local employees.
