Germany is marking Angela Merkel’s last full day as chancellor, saying goodbye to a leader who has played a key role in Europe and the global stage.
Olaf Scholz is set to replace her on Wednesday – bringing the curtain down on her 16 years in office.
It paves the way for a transformed political landscape, with a new coalition government in place.

Germany has been restricted to produce nukes, biological and chemical weapons and cannot increase their military. These are certain rules Germany has to follow. Truth is that after 16 years of conservative party leadership, germans wanted a future orientated government that could lead them through the 21st century. Green energy (Greens), digital technology (FDP) and closing the gap between rich and poor (SPD), thats what made the new center-right-coalition win. The conservatives (CDU/CSU) had nothing more to offer, people were not convinced that this party is prepared for the future. I don’t even want to mention all the corruption scandals with covid-masks during the pandemic but this party was straight up ready to go. Only Merkel was holding it together over the last years and she knew that, thus welcoming the change. Very peaceful and friendly transition, she doesn’t even see the opposing partys as enemies.
