In Lebanon, public transport workers have been on strike as the country struggles with an economic crisis.
Drivers have been blocking roads across the capital, Beirut.
They are angry over increasing fuel prices and a sharp devaluation of the currency.
The crisis has been caused by growing national debt and political deadlock.
Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Beirut.

Time for the people of Lebanon to get a bicycles and go back to horse and cart
The lack of govt for that extended period had its toll . Gebran bassil / najib mikati / Saad Hariri / michel aoun, the only ministers who should’ve remained but because everyone in their position just loves clinging onto it the country took backward steps , a few years ago the nation was headed in a good direction
Hasan nasrullah should run the country
Except for the pro-Israeli countries Jordan and Saudi Arabia, all countries in the Middle East, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq are experiencing mysterious disasters. Is this really a coincidence?
Time for Bitcoin!
Hope Lebanon gain access to oil and gas off the coast as it seriously need revanue as it practically dont export.
They need a functioning government in order to manage the complexity of the exploitation of underwater gas deposits.
i Hope things get 10x worse
import everything and export nothing. What can go wrong?
You tell me what can they export?
Canibus
@Serge London Lol really?
@Cedar Animation I’m being serious, Lebanon should legalise recreational Canibus and encourage the tourism that comes with it.
@Serge London I don’t know about that the other idea but tourism is a good thing for Lebanon. Especially with the Roman Ruins, if these gouvernement make the country stable for tourism.
This reminds me of what happened in Venezuela. What can improve the situation 🤔?
moving to a better country
@yuriythebest wrong
Ask China to take over lebanon
Switch to electric buses and invest in solar. Good luck. Love from Uganda 🇺🇬 ❤️
Maybe the IMF can help but the problem is can they pay it back.
@Eikenhorst You are probably right, but they need to start somewhere on a sustainable path. What’s your solution for the transport crisis?
@Tau ceti IMF loans on interest. If they need a loan, they should look for a sharia compliant one
@Farah Mo My solution. I am sorry to say that there is simply no easy way out of the hole they are in. First it is going to get a lot worse before it is going to get any better. For example, the government should slash expenses in an absolutely dramatic way. For example, no more public transport, there is no money for that, sell it to a private owner. Pretty much sell absolutely everything you reasonably can. And the only thing you can invest in are things that make money, like better controls on taxation. And that will increase trust in the government from outside investors hopefully and things might turn for the best, or the whole thing implodes in civil war.
Anyway, the above won’t happen since the government isn’t there to get out of this crisis, they are only there to satisfy their own supporters and mainly themselves. And doing such drastic cuts is political suicide.
@Eikenhorst For sure the situation is in tatters. We can only pray for them
Iran & Hezbollah messed this country up
lebanen belong to india bcz anceint guru mede it fram india
…What? Please explain
Aren’t you guys busy with Pakistan?
Civil war!

There is more suffering in African countries.

Und weil der Mensch ein Mensch ist
It is sad that the people of Lebanon have to suffer all the corruption caused by your political system.
lol
Usa is a year away from this
Take your medicine
Same like srilanka.
Driving a car is not a human right. If you can’t afford to buy fuel, you need to take the bus.
If bus drivers can’t make enough money, they need to increase what they charge. Not beg government for subsidies.
there are few who would be able to afford bus rides at heightened prices and most of them who can can ride cars since the cost is nearly the same in Lebanon, plus all public services suck in Lebanon like the country.
Whoever oppresses the poor – enriches him,
whoever gives to the rich – impoverishes him.
Average jihadi nation
Thank Jeffrey Feltman for your predicaments
STOP being dramatic … ” we are now paying 1/4 of our monthly salary for electricity – how can anybody live like this ? ” .. so what – so am i !
( grow up – the USA pays MORE than 1/4 of our monthly salary for the monthly electric bill … been doing it for more than 100 years – still surviving )
My monthly electric bill is $200 … my monthly rent is $800 … PLUS 2 kids … PLUS 2 cars ( 2 car loans ) … & we STILL have enough for driving our cars to / from work everyday … HARD but do-able … do NOT give STUPID excuses – give solutions & show the world how determined you really are )
@Samson Soturian the only UTILITY i have is electritity.
oil furnace is a seperate bill.
garbage is a seperate bill.
no water bill.
no sewer bill.
internet is a seperate bill.
NONE are supplied by “the government” – as in ‘the government is not doing enough’ – what is the governemnt supposed to do – ignore LAWS – ‘if you do not pay your bills – you go to jail ‘
@Cedar Animation I make MOTRE comments against my fellow americans – JUST because I have an opinion – does NOT mean that I hate you. .. almost as RUDE a sme stating – ” why do all lebanese people look for an arguemnent / assume everyone hates them?”
@Cedar Animation Peole ove rher ein my home town are ying as well – 1/3 of my toen can’t afford their $200 a month electric bill – but ( international news ) does seem to care about “1st world contries” having people freezing to death in the winter – as their electricity ran out & they don’t have enough money – at least in LEbanon – they don’t “cut off your electricity” .. .in -3 F degree snowy nights !
@Cedar Animation Yes – the world is FULL of HATERS – as well indicated by your comments. .. YES _ i can see that quite clearly – you HATE me for my comments that ( here in the USA – I have it different ) says NOTHING about any hatred toward anybody else – so why did you assume their is HATRED ( towards you ) – when no other person seems to have HATE – except you …
@Cedar Animation they don’t have enough money to afford electricity – how is that issue … ” you think they are complaining about YOUR problems” … GOD no – they are complaining about electricity to keep warm … my problem is that my neighbors dog bit me & I have to get 4 rabies shots in my stomach – NO I did NOT think THEY were complaining about my problems of 4 RABIES shots into their stomach – where on earth did you get thje idea that I was complaining that they had to go through MY problems of NOT shooting my neighbors dog when he first charged me.
you are acting like my 8 year old daughter … ‘ it became hard – so I quit working ‘
you try living there, keyboard general
@Funkyboodah ( says the american born & raised in a 1st world nation ) … I’m a refugee from Haiti – … I had those problems as well – have you ? – I made a better life for myself – moving to a better country ( learning a new language – leaving all of my family behind ) so I wouldn’t need to put up with crappy living conditions anymore ( or death ) – I work & I pay my bills – don’t understand the attitude “refuse to work – but angry that can’t afford electricity’ – sounds like a problem you made yourself.
@Funkyboodah have you ? .. .bet you haven’t live anywhere outside the comfort of the USA ? .. why even bring up your nasty attitude of ” you try living there” … ( have you ever lived there – no ? – then STOP bad mouthing others EXACTLY like you – who haven’t either )
at what age did you get your first job ? .. no food in my house & I got tired of going to bed hungry – so at age 9 .. I got my 1st – job. … without me – ( or my income helping the family ) we would not have been able to afford food or electricity – so YES _ “I have been there” !
‘ why should I work when someone will take care of me if i don’t ”
( maybe that’s the whole problem here – acting like the government … “owes you” .. when in reality … you owe them ( for the services they have provided that you use everyday )
Lebanon a corrupt failed state with divided society. Shia Suni Christians but no Lebanese
So sad…….
well at least they on the janitor lvl on salaries and usa might be liyng and they not on janitor lvl. besides why u don´t talk about theyr pensions.
Lebanese logic: The economy is eating my pocket book, therefore I will hurt the economy until other people give me stuff.
Agreed. People have the right to go on strike but not block roads. In Lebanon the chickens are coming home to roost.
” my electric bill is high – so I am NOT going to work anymore – BUT – stay at home , using MORE electricity instead ” … !?
i mean my papa is a janitor and in a building he wins 30 euro a month in spain and i guess it looked in range , but if u see lebannon now , maybe the spanish are those blind ppl.
” Taking company busses to block the roads” … 1 ) ( USA ) ( arrested for stealing ) as it is a COMPANY bus – not your property – 2 ) ( USA ) you are responsible for any damage & re-imburse the “owner of the bus” for any costs of using it – 3 ) if you do not show up for work – 3 days in a row – you are automatically fired – 4) If you do NOT give your employer – 2 weeks notice of leaving – the employer can KEEP your last 2 weeks of pay.
( USA ) if you BLOCK traffic – disrupting the earning of money / keeping our economy going … you will be arrested & spend 2 – 3 years in PRISON.
PLUS ( each company affected can take you to court – for STEALING / “loss of income” – they made LESS money because of your ILLEGAL actions )
Grow up – how would you like it if you had a successful business & some guy 5 blocks down the road – decided to block the road ( stopping your income ) as he was mad at a gas station ( for rising prices ) – NOT to do with anything you may have done .
Once Lebanon people will want the SHARI’A LAW (DAWALATUL ISLAM) you will see their will be so many Humanitarian aid but hopefully you won’t need them at that time you will stay with the ISLAMIC STATE…DAWALATUL ISLAM BAQQIYA..
What a joke, terrorism will prevail then
No one should bail out Lebanon again. Let them fail
♥️♥️♥️
Are Iran going to pay peoples wages? Are Iran going to fix lebanon? Hezbollah must be really happy with the current situation allowing lebanon to suffocate just appease Iran and please there real masters in Tehran

Lebanon is the dream world of the US apocalyptic fandom, which is so entitled that can whine about the economic collapse, a civil war, or the end of the world for fun.
Don’t borrow money from China, borrow money from Europe
those who stand against israel face currancy war and us sanction
Lebanon that has no natural resources & no money.
The country has nothing to offer the world.
Lebanon is finished. Just forget about it.
USA is a year away from this !
