More than 40,000 migrants from Venezuela have unexpectedly lost their Colombian citizenship cards, without being told.
Most of them are the children of Colombian citizens.
As Al Jazeera’s @Alessandro Rampietti reports from Bogota, some have been arrested, while others cannot access their bank accounts or health care.

OMG… Who is going to Manufacture & Distribute the Drugs? This is a Tragedy!
The natives, they even had a huge market in the middle of Bogota. They don’t need help to accomplish that.
Only keep women with big culo
The Guy is clearly a dual citizen at birth. Born in Venezuela to a Columbian Citizen. That’s a dual citizen by birth. He doesn’t have to apply for citizenship, he needs to get a lawyer and claim it.
@MaNdaba wakwaNdaba Yes they use right by blood “Jus Sanguinis” to determine citizenship. Nearly every country in the America’s implements right by soil “Jus Soli” to determine citizenship. Irrespective of your parents citizenship or legal status in said country. But, most countries especially European ones will have a mix between Jus sanguinis and Jus Soli principles in determining a child’s citizenship at birth.
If you have a Colombian parent you have Colombian citizenship .
@MaNdaba wakwaNdaba and in Europe
@Jhon Murphy Exactly, the constitution of Colombia says that you are Colombian if you are born in the country and at least one of your parents is Colombian or a resident, or if you were born outside Colombia but one of your parents is Colombian and you move back to the country or register on the consulate.
So whatever “irregularity” they supposedly detected, the bare minimum would be to notify the people affected and provide a process to clarify whatever doubt with the documentation they have.
It’s Colombia not Columbia🥱🙄
Why? Why, 🌏Al Jazeera English?..
Some are eager to stoke the
flames of division, and to stand in the way of progress.
Some suggest
that it isn’t worth the effort — that we are fated to disagree, and
civilizations are doomed to clash.
Many more are simply skeptical that
real change can occur.
There’s so much fear, so much mistrust that has
built up over the years.
But if we choose to be bound by the past,
Oh 🌏Al Jazeera English
– we
will never move forward.
Thank you.
😀
O thanks for appreciation 👍 to me..
Yes, thank you
🌏Al Jazeera English!.
Good Job,
Staff and Crew of the 🌏Al Jazeera Group 🌎🌍 !!!.
Thank you.

why USA dont go to Venezuela like in afeganistan ? why?
It would be huge mess not alot of foreign or local people welcome US intervention and the government there has tailored their army to fight from jungles in case foreign army does invade and takes cities.
The CIA has been very active there, hence the termoil.
@Ms White lol never mind fact their government drove their economy into the dirt yeah forget all that just blame west you troll
Historical implications, heavy ones.
Brace yourself, trouble in the horizon.
Nice comment Mary ,how are you doing
It’s funny how people can just do these things to hard working people who actually helps the country this is Government working
hahahaha “hard working people”
This reminds me of the American Republican continued fight to deport all DACA Dreamers that know no other home. Migration is not a crime. This is needless cruelty.
Illegal migration is a crime…call it what it is.
By presidential rule they’re allowed to legaly reside in the country, the trouble is that venezuelans with no roots in this country get different benefits than Colombians, we have some universal social programs which usually remain clogged due to high demand, which is why the government doesnt want to overexert them.
This allows for diplomatic pressure on Venezuela, in part. Common people are often pawns in the games of powerful people, and this is no different.
The relationship between the two countries is complicated and not conducive for peaceful relations.
@Reza dreamers aren’t homeless junkies because they pay a lot to every year to stay here and have criminal records monitored very closely. I have several friends on DACA. One had to marry US citizen or be deported for DUI and the other pays about 1200 a year to immigration if I remember correctly
@Reza no, but then US should change their stupid immigration law of citizenship by birth. Which other western countries does this anyway?
Exactly something a Republican like Trump would do 🤔.
Apples and oranges. you know nothing about the situation here, trump would be a right of center moderate in comparison to the uribismo gov here. everything is not comparable to your little world view
@gavin hill Thanks so much for that super harsh response, I’ll be sure to tell people about how nice you were 🤩

Fake news, these are not Venezuelan citizens so they can’t lose their citizenship to begin with
Venezuela the nation with the most oil reserves in the world
it is the poorest nation in the region thanks to China and Russia
USA is afraid. Time for China to increase pressure.
Well was his ID fake? Sorry.
Obviously, he believed that it was real
Edward Castrillón’s ID was real (I’m assuming that’s who you are referring to). Remember, he already has an established life in Colombia, including a credit history.
@Lea D It’s a troll, maybe paid.
Interestingly, both citizens don’t have a crucial barrier/: the language
Because both countries are former Spanish colonies.
@tugful they were the same country 200 years ago
Moral of the story…
Don’t use a fake I’D 😂😂
This report went right over your head 🤦♂️
@Luis Medina He gets his news from “TLDR” sections of Facebook troll feeds.
@Kyle Smith for sure
This is why the average person joins groups like FARC, they have no other choice, is either that or still be at the mercy of the federal government and starve to death, not to mention the resentment.
Duque is desperate for Petro not to win. The Colombian right wing is now hysterical because they have completely lost their handle on power in government. Petro is a socialist. Duque is buck jumping for his masters the USA.
Dang that stinks
I hope people in the states realize how bad the wave of immigration from Venezuela and Colombia and Brazil 🇧🇷 and Cuba and Indians and Georgians coming to the United States it’s insane. I work with a doctor here in AZ we help refugees coming from these nations and let me tell you it’s so bad we get about 300 refugees a day. I personally don’t understand the immigration system here in the states personally it’s a mess of a system and a lot of these people do flee violence and dictatorship but man the amount of people that come it’s insane. I will let you guys know that out of 300 refugees before 1/21/2022, a good 50 percent of them were from Venezuela but after 1/21/2022 since Mexico started to ask for visas from people Venezuela that amount dropped to like 8 percent and now the majority of refugees are from Colombia and Cuba and Peru and India and Pakistan and Georgia and Uzbekistan.
@HINDU ARMY 🕉️🚩 Indians are poor bud.. ask me how I know
The United States created these problems todAy with the war against communism and now the war on drugs also sections.
People want a better life for their children.
@Misutasutanto I never said Indians were rich . The Indians that I have spoken to say they are basically bro and a lot of these guys are basically young Indians.
@levner brown I agree and the US has a crappy immigration system that is literally not run properly.
Crazy, I’m Venezuelan and I definitely think people unprepared to live in such complex society as that of the US should not be allowed sanctuary for the sake of doing so. One hears all the time about Venezuelans entering the country through the border illegally, those are the ones you don’t want as a neighbor, ever.
They use to be one nation.
They are doing this after freely letting in a bunch of undocumented people without background checks who are killing on the streets. Sad for the people who came here legally to work seeking refuge.
It is Totally an abused of the human rights and to the venezuelan-colombian people

News report
Nothing new here this is the classic Colombian historical resentment towards Venezuelans, not even the Chavistas dared to do this blatant violation of due citizenship, let’s not even mention the previous governments that allowed specific services for Colombians to send money to Colombia when it was submerged in the guerrilla wars. Plenty of Venezuelans are historically Colombians as these people are from the Andes, specially Tachira, a Colombian hub in the country. This persecution is not new, it has been growing steadily since 2017, they harass Venezuelans and act like it’s all a witchhunt.
You mean like that time that Maburro kicked a bunch of Colombian families out of their homes in Venezuela and they had to cross the border back to Colombia with only a few belongings??
@Lau Vasquez Yes, so far this is the only incident and sadly I’d be not surprised if many were illegal, in the case of the demon himself he might have a legitimate reason to do so, but historically Colombia has always done this type of mischievous stuff like issuing illegal IDs to the wuayuu people for political advances, constant harassment towards LEGAL workers as if the welfare in Colombia is that of the US, I could continue… but I don’t want to, I like the country but detest the arribismo and immorality.
Mind you many fellow country men of yours have infiltrated the military, worked illegally as blue-collar workers and stablish themselves in slums contributing to the overpopulation of the cities.
Ese es le que quieren los venezolanos para meterse a EU
