Anti-war protests are continuing around the world, including in Berlin. Tens of thousands have gathered in the German capital to denounce Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Germany’s chancellor received a standing ovation in parliament earlier when he announced Berlin would be spending $100bn on its military defences.

It’s funny that you mention economic ties — “this madness” started in 2013 because Russia didn’t want Ukraine to have a free-trade agreement with the EU. The catalyst for Euromaidan was that Putin tried to sabotage the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

@Croucele I take some of your points, but for a lot of British it requires a leap of faith as it is still not beyond the national consciousness that they destroyed our cities in the Blitz and the young men who dies face down in the mud trying to liberate France. I agree it seems like Germany has become a mature and grounded & fair nation but their remains the suspicion that their MO has merely shifted to soft control thru EU domination. We would have to be naive after 2 world wars not to be extremely cautious. Many countries with high population but not a lot of room, which have had centuries of complicated relations squezed together can cause wars. But its also because those wars are more reported about. Since WW2 the US (for example) has lead numerous wars all around the world and there have been many wars going on in africa and the middle east while europe has been one of the most peaceful places in the world. Its just not covered that much in western history books and Media.

In the last 30 years show me the never spend less on their military than the uk (In 2019 nearly 10 bn € more). The Bundeswehr is too inefficient. Under defence minister Ursula von der Leyen only the defence ministry spend in one year officially 370 million € on consulting firms. For example they spend €10 million on consulting firms to tell them how to buy wholly caps.
The same things happened by buying masks, test or anything. The German government and especially the CDU/CSU are very corrupt, but also other parties like the SPD (RWE, Gazprom) and the FDP (Mövenpick,…) have huge problems with corruption.
So The €100 billion will probably fix some things, but even with that amount of money Germany will probably still be lacking behind France and the United Kingdom.
The UK ground forces are currently in a much worse condition than the German. Considering ground forces alone Germany is already ahead of the UK and France for a european theater. UK and France problem is that they have focussed on COIN warfare like Afghanistan too much, their armies have been converted to a lightweight peacekeeping force, way too much MRAP’s and light infantry rather than IFVs, MBTs, artillery and mechanised infantry. UK barely has any tanks left, most of them severely outdated (currently being fixed by Rheinmetall, but only a small amount). Same with their Warrior IFV (replacement desaster). France has a few Leclercs and tracked SPHs left, but everything else is light and wheeled aswell . CAESAR howitzer can’t shoot and scoot like it’s required for combined arms, VBCI is a lightweight wheeled IFV. Meanwhile Germany has the most modern MBTs and IFVs in Europe, just the numbers and readyness are too low, and that is fixable with money.
Germany almost made the same mistake as UK and France though, but they changed doctrine back to high intensity conflict somewhere at the 2014 Crimea crisis.

The only exception will be the acquisition of American F35 fighter jets to replace the ageing Tornadoes (though these plans have been existing for ages).
