Of course the Russians are preparing to invade…the real questions are; how far will they go if they do and how will the West react ? The West will fold if the Russians limit the invasion to just the Donbass region or even linking Crimea and Donbass. As long as the Russians steer clear of the borders of any NATO members, this will end with tepid sanctions against Russia that preserves the flow of natural gas to Germany and keeps the war from expanding into Europe proper.
What to be next is Russia waiting for the US to respond with a security written guarantee to Russia’s proposals, if the US is still beating around the bush Ukraine will be destroyed by their own citizens. The opposition are beginning to make their voice heard by going against the US support on Ukraine redicals government. I am guessing Ukraine will be split In half.

im not sure what the actual or significant benefits an invasion could gain for Russia. If they move into the dombass and the Crimea then that would be just moving into territory that they already have control over. The problem is can the Russians absolutely guarantee no casualties almost like all the fatalities are Ukrainian and no Russian casualties. Remember Ukraine is not and never has been a strategic asset for the US. It may also trigger Sweden and Finland to join Nato to gain reassurance that they will not be targeted next. Additionally the Russian economy is in decline and over time may struggle to continue defence spending on the scale needed for supporting its aspirations.
