Russia has been attacking Kyiv from the air but with its forces positioned around the capital, Ukrainians are wondering if a ground attack will be next. Urban warfare expert John Spencer, a former army officer, lists his strategy tips on how to defend Kyiv.
Previously it looks like key bridges were detonated too late in other cities. I hope they don’t make the same mistake.
Also Russia had the long range superiority, so Ukraine might be better to allow troops and tanks to close into very well defended areas. Stealth and deception is very important, make them think you are weak where you are very strong.
To destroy the bridges in Kieve is futile, as the River splits the city roughly in to halfs and the Russians are encroaching to the east and west. By the point you would have to blow up the bridges, your city center is essentially gone and you have nowhere to retreat.

In Afghanistan, the Afghan army did not offer any resistance in the last days. This is a total opposite of what the Ukrainians are doing. So I would not rely on the Taliban for advice here. They were lucky that a big chunk of Afghans supported them. Russia may have that in Donbas, but that’s it.

They are going to need airdrops if they don’t already. Which Ukraine may lack the capaiblity to do.
@Robert Maybeth yea I think so too, airdrops are risky though. They are defendless in mid-air to enemy aircraft and enemy anti-air. Also if the city is surrounded, land routes for supplies might be block.
I think the best solution is having an underground route like a subway in and out of the city, to bring in supplies. But heavily guard it, and have a fail safe to blow up tunnels if the entrance is compromised.

It just my assumption, but I would assume most of the Ukrainian ground forces will be remaining underground during that initial phase of bombardment of Kyiv. Most military experts (retired Generals) have said that it’s likely that will happen first.
And then the 2nd phase happens (Russian ground forces start moving in), that is when the real fighting and winning can begin. That’s when the urban warfare can begin.
The last thing the Ukrainians need is more American advice.

The best way to de-stroy defenders in underground tunnels or in basements is to smoke them out, pump as much toxic smoke as you can into the tunnels, The other great way to De-Stroy defenders hiding underground in tunnels is to dump gasoline and diesel fuel any liquid or gas that burns/natural gas /propane and flood the tunnels then let the fumes move around then torch it. this causes an ex-plosion that can de-stroy several blocks of tunnels and undermine buildings. and of course, common toxic liquids like chlorine/bleach/acids all are stored in large amounts in many cities and can be dumped into tunnels. Little correction: The Russians don´t need to get into the city. For phase one, they only need to get around the city to block it off. If they manage to do that, they can block all supplies from getting into the city, including food and ammo. And they can start levelling the houses in the outskirts with artillery. From then on, they can inch closer and closer.
That was all the fighting of the last week about, to deny the Russians the positions to block off and shell the city. So far, the Russians have gained some footholds and have dug in.
And there is a little catch regarding the metro system. Right to the north of Kiev is a huge hydroelectric plant. If need be, the Russians could destroy or capture the dam and let the water flow into Kiev´s city center, turning the metro system essentially into a death trap.

In Aleppo the rebels had a tunnel over 2 km long.
It was used for everything from resupply, moving wounded out and getting fighters in.
They held out after being surrounded for a very long time because of it.
