The defence minister says four months of service would not be long enough in the event of a conflict.
Military drills have taken place on the Dongyin archipelago, a string of islands that are closer to mainland China than they are to Taipei.

When China decides they want the re-unification to happen, it’ll happen. Nothing can stop that. Taiwanese people would be better off finding a peaceful way of doing so. America won’t be coming to the rescue. They won’t risk full Nuclear war against china over Taiwan. Sure there will be sanctions a plenty, although that’ll be harder since the U.S. relies so much on China and vice versa. I disagree with China’s position on this, but they have never faltered on their position, and use some of the strongest language possible when talking about Taiwan. They will never give it up. Might = right in our global power system, and China is a global super power, and is continuing to get more powerful every single year.

It is hoped that both China and Taiwan can find ways other than all-out war to manage their extraordinary differences of governance and politics, geographical and linguistic boundaries as well as the Chinese Constitution and new Chinese security laws. And in both popular Chinese dialects. And for all people concerned in and of both “Chinas”.

Taiwan should not need to fear that they will be invaded, they have been independent for a long time, they are a peaceful functional democracy. They are an ISLAND, to think the mainland has inherent ownership is gross. China already lied about treatment of Hong Kong. The world needs to do a better job at unifying behind places like Ukraine & Taiwan. We need to find a solution to more complicated dysfunctions like Yemen, Afghanistan, El Salvador, Haiti, Sudan etc also.

NATO and Europe have no inherent sole responsibility to intervene in Ukraine, it is a global responsibility, but countries in Europe & NATO & honorable countries like Japan & Taiwan & South Korea etc are helping. Taiwan policy is complicated according to leaders, they don’t ask my opinion. If Taiwanese voted to join China in a legit manner that is up to them, if China try’s to force Taiwan under the CCP boot, the global community needs to step up. Stop pretending the US or Europe is responsible to solve all the world problems, everyone just complains later anyways, or doesn’t step up to do their part in issues like Ukraine/Russia.

@Spicy Nyampire They aren’t alone, I’m not in charge of military policy, but we have been quite supportive to both, direct intervention is clearly a part of NATO alliance but if other arrangements have different parameters… and the circumstances of the times matter also, if Ukraine is destroyed Taiwan will be in a weaker position. Taiwan needs to secure themselves & cooperate with allies. If the people of Taiwan are motivated to defend their island, and are well prepared, they will be very formidable Island Nation. With cooperation that hopefully builds off of Ukrainian successes & expands… the international community would not accept a brutalization of the Taiwanese either. But they will likely be responsible for most of be heavy lifting, which is very winnable if prepared. Assume those aspects, nurture additional relationships to increase likelihood of a quicker more robust global response to your aid…

When planning for the coming invasion of Taiwan, the two sides of the Taiwan Stait decided on one thing in common. Both China and Taiwan are making war preparations under the assumption of full military intervensions by the US and Japan. China has yet to make a move on Taiwan as the Chinese military is not yet convinced of its ability to deter/defeat a joint US-Japanese intervention fleet/air force. This may soon change when China put in service its 3rd aircraft carrier with eletro-magnetic catapults and J35 stealth planes, together with a flotilla of land assult ships. China is building its military to not only invade Taiwan but to fight a war with US/Japan. Taiwan, on the other hand, is also establishing its military doctrine with direct US/Japanese military intervention in mind. Taiwanese defenses are build ONLY to withhold the INITIAL onslaught of Chinese invasion forces, with its entire agenda focusing on preserving its forces for as long as possible such that it may sustain its resistence for one to two weeks, the time required for US/Japan to send over their reinforcements to fight the Chinese. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. Taiwanese confidence in their survival was dealt with a huge blow after they watch in shock of the humiliating Afghanistan withdrawl and US’ reluctance to send in actual combat troops into Ukraine. Simply on its own, the Taiwanese are hopeless against the mighty Chinse fighting force. The fact that the Chinese military is preparing for combat operations with US/Japan, further ensures that US/Japan would be extremely hesitant to intervene when the war finally breaks out.

I am ordinary citizen from Taiwan, China. Since the suspension of civil war in 1949, there are two governing bodies governing two parts of China. The mainland call themselves People’s Republic of China, which is ruled by communist party. And our official name is not Taiwan, our name is Republic of China, Taiwan and mainland China are just two parts of China. Doesn’t matter how much the West or the Americans hate People’s Republic of China or the communist party, they couldn’t change the fact, both mainland China and Taiwan are two parts of China, we will get unification at the end. The Americans and the West just wanna use us as chess piece to deter the rise of mainland China. Go to separate Catalonia from Spain, Hawaii and California from the USA, or Scotland from the UK, or Quensland from Australia. Do you know why China did not seek to conquer the Taiwanese islands near the mainland ?
Taiwan stationed a huge chunk of their military on those islands and heavily reinforced the defense of those islands with bunkers, tank traps, etc. It would have been too costly for China to try and take those islands even if those islands were only a couple miles off the coast of China. Doing even the simplest naval landing invasions are extremely difficult. So instead trying to invade them, China decided to lob artillery shells at those islands. Unfortunately it wasn’t that effective because the Taiwanese military had underground tunnels constructed. That’s kind of a general reason why those islands remained under Taiwan’s control.

People talk about why the USA does not start a war against North Korea, that is something I can understand completly, but what if North Korea starts a war against South Korea instead in their own time? What would the USA do then? They would not stand with South Korea but let it down like Ukraine. And South Korea has no neighbours that can smuggle weapons to it like Ukraine. The USA would even hesitate to take in more refugees as they did with Afghanistan and Ukraine. Moreover, the USA is broken, they have not anymore the ability to fight wars like they did before in Iraq and Aghanistan. And North Korea has always intended to do with Seoul what Russia did with Ukraine, taking those chess stones of America from the chessboard and target those who own the world economy with Swift and Sanctions. And the funny part is that if North Korea is bissy with South Korea and Japan or the USA do not stay out of their fight, they will be targeted at home, nuclear or conventional, this are other times, this time South Korea has do it alone, Japan will follow Ukraine and South Korea in destiny, be destructed and Taiwan will capitulate without fighting and escape the faith of the other three!
