I am a victim of Identity Theft (3rd Stimulus payment). $1400 went into the thief’s account on October 2021. The person used my social security number, of course, to impersonate me.
This is real. I put in my Identity Theft Affidavit as instructed by the IRS… I have been waiting since November 2021.
For those of you in my situation, the Identity Theft Department said that there are people still ahead of me.
The total wait time can be up to a total of 11 months now depending on the complexity of your case. That is up from the 120-180 days the IRS told us last year. It is still a huge backlog even with the recent hires to help move along processing time.
I had to file paper because the thief filed electronically.
If you call the IRS and get high call volume alert… try every 3 minutes… or call around 7 am and/or an hour before closing 5 pm. Be patient.
Millions of people called last year and IRS responded to 11% of the calls. Horrible. 🙁
I admit I am very angry because now I have to wait an extended period due to my identity stolen. Feels like a punishment.
P.S. Also, you can call your local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center and schedule an appointment. Sometimes they open on weekends. The wait time is 15 to 30 minutes… they picked up the the line around 45 minutes for me. If you can- just put your phone on speaker and do something else to keep busy. The good thing about going in is you can go through the authentication process.
When you call the 844.545.5640- Sometimes the IRS may not be able to authenticate you during the call… because they do not yet have enough information to give to you at the moment or may not be able to verify certain information you gave them because another department is still working on your case.
Remember that it is still COVID … so therefore these offices are not running on a full schedule is my understanding.
