Peruvians continued a wave of protests against a rapid surge in fuel and fertiliser prices triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the Andean nation’s government moved to try to lower prices.
The turmoil erupted last week as farmers and truckers blocked some main highways to Lima, leading to a sudden surge in food prices.
The government responded over the weekend with a proposal to forego most taxes on fuel to lower prices while also raising the minimum wage.
Analysts say President Pedro Castillo’s populist measures could eventually bring some peace, but a serious crisis looms ahead for him.
Last week Castillo survived a second round of impeachment proceedings after nine months in office spearheaded by his political foes in congress – but now it is the people who first supported him who are demanding him to fulfil his promises or leave.

I don’t what they expect him to do. Inflation and rising cost of goods and fuel is literally in every country. Even the west is suffering heavily from it. So if they expect him to able to do anything to change that, is practically gonna be impossible. Sure he can force the prices to go down, but then his country economy would be run to the ground this way. Forcing prices to remain low domestically while importing expensive goods from outside is gonna empty their funds very quickly.
Even if there are some solutions, it’s not like it’s gonna happen immediately. It takes months to years for some solution to bear fruit.

Imagine though. Peru prices are literally about the same. $4-5 for a gallon of milk. Our average wage is $15 hour or $1900 a month and 8n peru it’s around $300-500 monthly without education . They pay American prices but make 1/5 of our pay that 8s why everyone wants to come here

Because of a globalized economy, doesn’t matter if only neighbors countries were buying gas or food from Ukraine or Russia, if Ukraine or Russia stop producing goods or produce less goods, then those neighbors countries are forced to buy from other countries and the way to do it is offering greater prices for the goods. So prices goes up while quantities avaliable declines.
All countries centeal banks printing money to protect the rich and their system. This is causing massive inflation for the people everywhere. The central banks should NOT protect the wealthy only. Raising minimum wage only increases costs of everything central banks need to go.

Things are getting tougher for everyone right now but be thankful for what you have. I lost my job during the pandemic and I felt like my life fell apart, but for me it was a moment of spiritual development.
